While smooth, glowing skin is essential to any makeup look, the base of your makeup runs a close second. Foundation is one of my favorite beauty products, because it really drives your initial direction of your desired look; you can get a dewy and glowing finish, or you can end up matte and flawless, or you can emphasize your own beautiful skin by channeling a natural, skin-like finish. Today, I’m discussing my favorite foundations: three high-end, and three from the drugstore!
High-End: In order of high-to-low coverage
#1: My holy grail, tried and true, best friend foundation is hands-down Estée Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place Makeup. You’ll find that most websites call this a “natural” finish foundation, and that’s just not the case. When I’m applying a full face of makeup, I want to look flawless. (If I wanted a natural finish, I’d go with a BB cream or powder foundation, just saying!) This foundation is full-coverage, it’s long-wearing, and it can stand the test of heat, humidity, or a really long day! It can feel a little thick for some people, because it can be fairly mattifying, but when you’re applying a foundation that is marketed to stay in place for 24 hours, isn’t that what you want? Yes!
#2: Too Faced Born This Way Foundation – If I were going to wear something more “natural,” but still wanted full coverage, this is my go-to. It’s a medium-to-full coverage foundation, but can still be built into a full coverage base. While it’s working to cover any and every blemish, it also provides a subtle, radiant glow to the skin. It’s infused with coconut water to provide hydration, Alpine rose to brighten the skin, and hyaluronic acid to balance the skin’s hydration to provide for a longer no-blotting-needed finish. (Truth: if you don’t properly prep/moisturize your skin, your skin (or products like this one) will produce extra oil to balance your skin’s hydration, which is what creates the need to blot!) This is a great transitional foundation, as it can provide normal, medium coverage for the work week, and full, long-lasting coverage for the weekend!
#3: It Cosmetics: Your Skin But Better CC+ Cream with SPF 50 provides enough coverage for me to feel comfortable (keep in mind, I like my full coverage) but still provides skin benefits and a breathable finish that I’m looking for in a daily-wear foundation. While the color selection is limited, that’s greatly outweighed by all of the amazing ingredients. First and foremost, it has an SPF of 50, which is an incredible way to incorporate skin-protection into your daily routine without smelling like you’re laying by the pool. It’s infused with collagen, hyaluronic acid, peptides, vitamins, and a plethora of other amazing benefits that coordinate to improve your skin while creating a supple and radiant surface for the rest of your routine favorites!
Drugstore: In order of high-to-low coverage
#1: Covergirl + Olay Stay Fabulous 3-in-1 Foundation is another one of my favorite transitional foundations, because you can wear it as a natural everyday base, or build it up to provide full-coverage, but still comfortable, weekend wear. It has a very skin-like finish, and doesn’t need many blots throughout the day to keep that finish. It feels very light on the skin, and really speeds up the application process because it provides Olay moisturizer/primer in the foundation. (Now that is what I’m looking for on those busy work mornings!)
#2: Neutrogena SkinClearing Makeup – What. A. Win. A foundation with acne-clearing technology in it, that doesn’t only treat blemishes, but also prevents emerging breakouts by breaking through oil and unclogging pores. Clogged pores go hand-in-hand with a full coverage makeup look, as it’s really hard to let your skin breathe when it’s under a layer of paint! This is a thin formula, so it may need a little additional concealer, and it does tend to oxidize (turn darker/a little orange) on my skin, but in exchange for clearer skin while wearing foundation, I can go a shade lighter to avoid that! For anyone with problem skin, this won’t break the bank, but will break the breakouts!
#3: Physicians Formula: The Healthy Foundation SPF 20 is another skin jewel because it is packed with benefits. It’s lightweight, blendable, buildable, and brightening. It’s infused with hyaluronic acid and a special Chinese extract that hydrates and evens skin tone. It’s great for any skin type, as it’s natural enough for younger skin, but hydrating enough for mature skin. Plus, it has SPF 20 in it, which provides your daily dose of love and care to your skin to keep it looking younger, longer!
Please let me know if you try any of these out, or if you have any recommendations for me! As always, I’m always open to try new makeup! 😉
